We got our VB/CO plot for Burn2 this week!
There’s a month of prep time, and then:
The festival is open to the public Oct. 16 thru 24!
All plots will return to bare ground on Oct 31.

I honestly haven’t even had a chance to think about what we should do there (suggestions?? :)) but I like something crossing VB11, our performance at Burning Life ’09, and VB19, our installation at SL7B, Second Life’s 7th Birthday Party.
In VB11 – Fire Walk With Me, we turned our audience into our cast, clad them in flaming grid skins, and let them “ride” a tower of spinning bottles.
In VB19 – I Avatar, our “VB/CO Museum” pavilion gave out questionnaires about Avatar Identity and posted peeps replies on the walls of the museum.
I definitely like the idea of engaging our audience as participants; who doesn’t love setting them on fire!? And hearing their thoughts about living in this world is an ongoing question that resonates to the very core of this company.
Here’s the official Burn2 Theme Statement:
This year’s theme is “Metropolis – Civilization in the Desert.” Exploration and expression of the urban reality in the style of Burning Man, where materials are trucked into the desert to build a temporary city that then disappears, leaving no trace.The “Civilization in the Desert” was added to the main Burning Man theme of Metropolis to set a tone of impermanence and desert orientation. The intention is to imitate Burning Man, being set in a very real desert with very real transportation issues, and to lead away from the construction of huge and heavy structures that would be disingenuous, given the desert nature of burning culture.
To start off I thought we’d temporarily “mark our spot” by putting up our VB/CO Museum/Pavilion and I added the spinning Gogbotahedron coming out of the roof. Let’s hook up, brainstorm, build, and plan for interactivity in the next month.

It’s crazy to think that Burning Life ’09 was THIRTY-FOUR Regions… and Burn2 is SIX! 🙂
Still, Burning Life ’08 was before I was born – I wasn’t even a glint in my typist’s eye back then!!! – and I’m SO grateful to have experienced the fun and madness of one giant 34-Sim event. We participated thrice, in Silene Christen’s Artist’s Duel Camp, our own Burning Life Zombie Crawl Flashmob, and, of course, our VB11 Fire Walk With Me performance.
Now I’m finding it exciting to participate in something big and crazy AND perhaps a bit more intimate. From the first days of building it looks like all the SL/Burner creativity is here on the playa, perhaps a bit less in total, but still lots, and densely crammed into 6 sims. Perhaps this more manageable size will foster more interactivity, community, and on-site creativity.
You can’t say a bad word about Burning Life ’09, and indeed Silene’s Artist Camp was all about creating on-site, learning new things, and interacting with other artists. Still, I think the bulk of ’09 was an open house of amazing stuff to go look at. Perhaps in this tight-knit 6-region Burn2 we can interact more. Maybe I should tear down that big glass museum already… plant a few giant toadstools… sit on one… and see who wanders along…
PS: and just in case Penny thinks she’s still in WoW… there’s nobody here… and it still takes half hour to download a 512 texture! 🙁
