BERLIN, 26 April — Opening here tomorrow is Gallery Weekend Berlin 2012: 51 Galleries and 51 Openings in 3 Days and 3 Nights, from 27-29 April. And with GWB2012 comes Virtual Gallery Weekend, also opening on 27 April and running thru 2 May.
What V-GWB-2012 is not, is a collection of Virtual or 3D art installations. At each “gallery” in this Virtual Berlin world, you are greeted by a series of 2D images that could, without the trouble of a software download, have been a website. However, what V-GWB-2012 is, is an immersive map of Berlin and the 51 GWB Galleries, complete with text and voice chat. Virtual GWB aims to help the physical attendee have a better feel for the city, the galleries, and the art they can encounter; to help those not physically able to attend to have a spatial sensation of the 51-gallery event; and to let both discuss the overall event, the galleries, and the work through text and voice.
I’ve just taken a quick peek at this world and will return tomorrow for the opening. Included here are some screen shots of my first wander thru V-GWB-2012.
