WAN CHAI, HONG KONG, 1991 — “Persona.” Yes, my senior thesis choreography was named after a Bergman film. haha. I was 22. You’re supposed to be pretentious and dramatic, right? Anyway, since I showed you the “inside view” of my sexy tibiae yesterday, I thought I’d give you the “outside view” today. Did my leg make a line, or what!? 🙂
And, haha, I’m doing pretty good drama! In front of me, with her back to you, is Kerry Hickey, and behind me and facing you are Terri Ray and Liz Tarnov. In spite of all the dramatic posing and lighting, this piece was so much fun to do. I was probably in the best shape of my life and I was making dance and making art with great friends.
THE HAGUE, 2012 — I wasn’t yet pregnant in this photo, but one year later, I’d be holding a baby in my arms. I had Xue when I was 22. Gawd. She’s 20 today. I hope she’s smarter than I was.
How do you tell your own daughter what a mistake you made, without it seeming like you’re sorry you had her? Or that she’s anything less than the most amazing person you’ve ever been lucky enough to spend a life with? How do you tell her that? How do you tell yourself?
